Vitamin D information has only become prevalent in recent years. Why? Because only in the last decade have scientists and researchers considered doing studies about Vitamin D. Those studies have revealed that this vitamin is essential for our bodies.
Dr. Michael Holick, a professor at the Boston University School of Medicine, for instance, has done several different kinds of studies that indicate that Vitamin D is vital for our bodies. It is a nutrient that is critically important for the growth, development, and maintenance of an optimum healthy body, from newborn babies to the very elderly - until the last breath is taken.
How do we make sure to have the necessary amount of Vitamin D in our bodies? Well, have you ever heard that Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin? That’s because the sun naturally makes this vitamin in on the skin when there is unprotected exposure to it between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for at least 10 minutes, three times a week.
Of course, not everywhere around the globe is possible for someone to get sun light at its best. Anyone who lives anywhere above the equator is not going to have good sun light all year around. If someone lives in Boston, Massachusetts, for example, and exposes himself/herself to the sun every day, in winter, nothing is going to happen because the sun is not hot enough.
So what can you do if you live in a cold area? Well, Vitamin D information state that it’s also possible to get Vitamin D by eating Vitamin D rich foods, such as wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna, liver, greens (broccoli, kale) and Vitamin D enriched foods: milk and other dairy products, juices, and cereals. However, if these fish aren’t wild, if they are raised in farms, they don’t have any vitamin in them. Many food manufactures are now becoming more conscious about the need for Vitamin D in our diets and are starting to add it to the foods. Check the labels of products before buying them, to make sure they have been enriched with this vitamin.
It’s great to try to have a good diet. However, Vitamin D information studies have shown that we aren’t able to get enough of this vitamin from our diets alone. The solution, then, is to take a good Vitamin D supplement to either complement or to fulfill our body requirements.
Most scientists and researchers agree that a newborn baby should be in 400 IU (international units) of Vitamin D a day for the first year of life because there isn’t enough of this nutrient in breast milk. As for the average healthy adult should take at least 1,000 IU a day. Dr Holick said, in a recent interview, that he takes a supplement that contains 1,000 IU of Vitamin D and a multivitamin that contains 400 units. He also drinks at least three glasses of milk a day. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. What that means is that it’s absorbed by the fat in our bodies and may be released into the blood as needed. But that doesn’t mean that a heavy person has more Vitamin D in the body than a thin person. On the contrary, it’s harder for heavier people to absorb Vitamin D than thinner people. They need to take twice as much of this vitamin to have sufficient amounts of it circulating in their blood.
Vitamin D information researches say that many common cancers symptoms’ may be improved by the intake of this nutrient. They also state that a person suffering from aches and pains in his bones and muscles can improve those symptoms by increasing his Vitamin D levels in the body.
